Infant ear molding
A non-surgical option for some infant ear shape concerns. A pediatric assessment can establish whether ear molding may be suitable for your baby.
This is time-sensitive
The best time to start is within the first one to two weeks of life, while the cartilage is at its most malleable. Treatment can still succeed up to about six weeks. After that the cartilage stiffens, and by around three months the ear’s shape is essentially set. If your baby’s ear looks folded or misshapen, it is worth a call this week rather than next month.
Not sure whether it applies to your baby? An assessment settles it.
Ear molding reshapes a baby’s ear without surgery, using a small device that applies gentle, sustained pressure while the cartilage is still soft. It is the only non-surgical option, and it works for a short window after birth.
Is this your baby?
Ear molding treats the shape of the outer ear, not hearing. It may be suitable if you notice:
- The top of the ear folds over on itself
- One or both ears stick out more than you expected
- The rim of the ear is flat, tight or missing its usual curve
- The ear looks compressed or creased, sometimes from the position in the womb
- A midwife, pediatrician or family member has mentioned the shape

What happens at the first visit
- 01We look at the earNot every ear difference suits molding. The first thing we establish is whether this one does.
- 02We explain the windowYour baby’s age decides a great deal. We will be straight with you about what is realistic from where you are.
- 03The device is fittedIf molding is suitable and you decide to go ahead, the device is applied to the ear. It is not an operation and there is no anaesthetic.
- 04You go home the same dayYou will know how to care for it, what to watch for, and when we want to see your baby again.
How it works
A newborn’s ear cartilage is unusually soft, because maternal estrogen is still circulating in the baby’s system. That softness is temporary, and it is what makes molding possible.
The device holds the ear in a corrected position and applies gentle, continuous pressure. It does not force anything. As the cartilage firms up over the following weeks, it firms up in the new shape.
It is worn continuously, day and night, for the length of treatment. Babies sleep in any position with it in place, and it is not painful — the pressure is far too light to cause discomfort.
How long it takes
Treatment usually runs between two and six weeks. Babies who start in the first week or two often finish in two to four; starting later generally means longer.
The results are permanent in the large majority of cases. Once the cartilage hardens in its corrected shape it keeps that shape, and the ear grows in proportion with the rest of the child.
While your baby is wearing it
Most of this is ordinary care. The device is designed to live with a newborn’s routine.
- Keep the skin around the device clean and dry
- Your baby can sleep in any position, as usual
- Come to the review appointments — they are how we see whether the shape is moving
- Tell us if the skin looks red or sore, rather than waiting for the next appointment

Will the ear correct itself if we wait?
Some mild differences do settle in the first few days. Most do not. Waiting is the one thing that closes the window — after the first few weeks the cartilage firms and non-surgical correction stops being an option.
Is it painful for my baby?
No. The device applies gentle, sustained pressure to soft cartilage, nowhere near enough to cause discomfort. Some babies are briefly unsettled while it is being applied and then ignore it.
Does my baby wear it all the time?
Yes, day and night, for the whole of the active treatment. The continuous gentle pressure is what does the work, so taking it on and off would undo progress.
Are the results permanent?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. Once the cartilage has hardened in its new shape it holds it, and the ear grows with your child.
What if we have already missed the window?
If the deformity is fixed, molding is no longer the route. Surgical correction — otoplasty — becomes the option, usually much later in childhood. Come and talk to us either way; we would rather tell you honestly than have you wonder.
Does this affect my baby’s hearing?
Ear molding is about the shape of the outer ear. If you have any concern about hearing, that is a separate assessment and we can arrange it.
